The All-Ukrainian Charity Foundation “Chess for Children” was founded in Ukraine in November 2012 by WIM Olena Boytsun. The primary purpose of the Foundation activity is to discover the potential of every child through engaging children into a game of chess and to promote chess and healthy lifestyle in the society. In 2013 the Foundation ran 7 projects and implemented 20 events all over Ukraine.
The following projects can be outlined in particular:
The project “Chess Ukraine” supports establishing new chess clubs and schools all over Ukraine as well as providing consultations, chess equipment and literature etc. The cooperation with the regional centers in order to develop children chess in the regions is also part of the project activities. The greatest attention is attracted by a new modern chess club and chess school for children in Krivoy Rog. It was launched in 2013 with the support of the UCF "Chess for Children”. Currently, the school has more than 200 children. At the local art square near the club the highest in the world 5 meter tall chess marble piece is situated.
The “Chess Holiday” project suggests that the Foundation organizes entertaining festivals and events for popularization of chess in the community. For example, in July 2013 the Chess Day Celebration together with the Ukrainian Chess Federation and the Sport Committee of Ukraine took place. During the event young chess players had a chance to show their knowledge of the game of chess by solving quizzes and chess problems, playing blitz games and so on. All together in 2013 the Foundation “Chess for Children” organized 8 chess holidays in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk and Krivoy Rog.
The project “Award named after Evgeniy Sozonov” is the private national annual award that was established by the Foundation in 2013 with the aim of supporting talented children aged between 10 to 15 years old, who show good results in both chess and school studies. In 2013 the Award was provided for the first time and the winner became Karina Skorobagatko (13 years, Kyiv). In total 38 applications from all over Ukraine was received. In order to announce the establishment of the Award named after Evgeniy Sozonov and to popularize chess in Ukraine in April 2013 the first female advanced chess match was played in Kyiv between the 12th Women World Champion GM Anna Ushenina and the President of the “Chess for Children” Foundation WIM Olena Boytsun. The match ended in a draw and attracted a lot of interest from the community and press.
The project “Chess Competitions” aims at organizing and supporting chess competitions among children in Ukraine as well as providing possibilities for participation in tournaments. In September 2013 in Dnipropetrovsk the chess tournament “Cup of the UCF “Chess for Children” took place. The event brought together 125 participants 14 year old and younger from all over Ukraine. The winners of the event as well as winners in many different categories received prizes and gifts from the Foundation, for example, tablets and e-books. In November 2013 96 players from Ukraine competed in the Ukrainian National Championship among children chess schools and clubs. The winning teams brought for their schools valuable gifts, including laptops and digital cameras.
The "Literary chess" project of the Foundation develops and distributes free books to children with the rules of the game of chess, made in an entertaining style, in order to engage children to play chess. In 2013 the Foundation took part at the Lviv Book Forum and the Frankfurter Book Exhibition with the presentation of the book “Babish Gilzi plays chess” by Olena Boytsun.

KL Open: It’s Three Times in a Row for Tiviakov
Apr 11, 2014
Sergei Tiviakov and Aravindh Chithambaram drew their game after three hours of play, a result that confirmed that Tiviakov would successfully defend his title and in doing so become a three time winner of the KL International Open.
But for young Chithambaram, it was also a fantastic result as with the draw the 14 year old IM-elect remained unbeaten and also achieved his second GM title norm.
So in first place is Tiviakov with 7/9, and in second to eighth places on 6.5/9 are Chithambaram, the also unbeaten M.K. Venkatesh, Nguyen Duc Hoa, Dzhumaev Marat, Haridas Pascua, Nguyen Anh Dung and Andika Pitra.
For Pascua, this result was his third and final norm to complete the requirements of International Master while for Pitra it was his second International Master title norm.

(The Guardian)

Open Letter of Georgian Chess Federation
Open letter
To:
The ECU board members,
The National Chess Federations of European Continent
The ECU Secretariat
The FIDE Secretariat
Dear Friends,
We would like to draw your attention to some important issues:
As each and everyone of you, we also do our best in order to popularize chess throughout the country, to promote its development and make it one of the most prominent sport activities! Therefore, we have done a lot recently, such as:
1. Annual budget of Georgian Chess Federation reached an unprecedented figure of one million Euros;
2. Georgia will host the top class Women’s Grand Prix (June) and Youth European Championships (October);
3. Last year, with the governmental support of 250000 Euros Tbilisi International Chess Academy started operations;
4. Created five years state program for the development of Georgian Chess Federation, which is in examination process by Georgian Government;
5. In 2015, Georgia will host World Chess Olympiad under 16;
6. In 2016, Nona Gaprindashvili 75th anniversary will be proceeded by World Championship under 8-10-12;
According to all above mentioned, our federation has an ambition to seek farther opportunities. Therefore, Georgian Chess Federation and Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs of Georgia met with great enthusiasm the idea of holding World Cup 2017 and World Chess Olympiad 2018 in Georgia, proposed by FIDE President Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov during his visit in Tbilisi, Georgia in 2013. Thereafter, the tedious work started in the field of budgeting issues of the chess boards.
As a result of our commitment and energy Georgian Government allocated unprecedented amount of money (14 462 500 Euros) from the state budget for holding both above mentioned competitions.
We prepared a BID and presented it to the FIDE Secretariat with the accordance to all the necessary standards and procedures.
One can imagine how surprised we were when heard that FIDE Presidential Board, held on March 30 in Khanty-Mansiysk, extended the BID application deadline until April 15. However, drawing from the global chess interests to hold the best possible chess Olympiad 2018, we decided not to protest, but to adapt to the decision made by the FIDE officials.
We are certain that we’ve done everything to host the top class Olympiad and established equal living and playing conditions of European standards for each and every federation.
When we first heard about Mr. Danailov’s puzzle released on his tweeter page we hoped that he would reveal the plans and secrets of FIDE leaders because as he was the representative of our European continent at the FIDE Presidential board meeting.
“Silvio Danailov @SilvioDanailov Apr 7
Chess puzzle of the day: Why Makro&friends “FIDE PB” illegally extended the deadline for submitting bids for the 2018 Olympiad to April 15th?”
Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the answer. We have not received any support from Mr. Danailov, but we discovered that president of the ECU (whose primary responsibility is to support and protect the interests of the European National Federations) openly supports 12 million USD bid of South Africa against Georgia’s 20 million USD bid.
Silvio Danailov @SilvioDanailov Apr 7
So far there are two official bids, the one from South Africa being a clear favorite. But they are opposition and need to receive a lesson
Silvio Danailov @SilvioDanailov Apr 7
That’s why Makro&friends are preparing a new bid from Africa in order to provoke mess,grab some African votes& try to spoil SA bid #smart
Besides, it should be noted that Georgian Chess Federation has done its best to support Mr. Danailov’s candidature to the ECU Presidential elections 2010 and helped him to overcome the crisis connected with the Women’s European Championship in 2011 with holding one of the successful tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Apart from all above mentioned we also found out that despite Georgian Arbiters’ high qualifications none of them represented in the Tromso Olympiad Arbiters list sent by Mr. Danailov to FIDE.
Nevertheless, due to the fact that Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili runs for ECU Presidential elections, we once again preferred not to respond to those unacceptable acts and tried to understand the political motivation of Mr. Danailov’s decision.
Finally, we saw the official answer on FIDE website to the Danailov’s Puzzle (http://www.fide.com/component/content/article/1-fide-news/7884-2018-olympiad.html) and found out that he attempted to mislead the world chess community by representing the situation as if everyone except himself was guilty. We would like to ask a rhetorical question to the ECU President: what is Mr. Danailov’s aim of abolishing the ECU regulations and supporting the South African bid.
Georgian Chess Federation is asking the honorable members of the ECU board:
1. To discuss and assess the facts of misleading Chess Society, abolishing our regulations and make appropriate and reasonable decision.
2. To support Georgian bid as the best one.
Sincerely,
GM Giorgi Giorgadze
President of GCF

Carlsen visited Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology
World Champion Magnus Carlsen visited Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology on 8th April to meet the students and guests and to give a simultaneous exhibition.
The event was organized by Runa Capital fund, Phystech-Union and Sberbank Technologies, with the purpose to give an opportunity to talented students to meet the World Chess Champion and to mark a new stage in the development of IT cluster at MIPT.
After the Q&A session hosted by Tina Kandelaki at the MIPT Concert Hall, the World Champion proceeded to play a simul against 13 students.
GM Sergey Shipov provided live commentary of the games.
Aisa Imeeva, Sergey Trofimov and Arman Geyvondyan held their own against Carlsen to secure three draws for the MIPT crowd.
“I am glad that I had such worthy opponents. The students played very well and in some games it was not easy for me to save myself. Right now they just lack experience, they play the middlegame well, but they cannot conclude a successful game with a victory. It comes with experience,” Carlsen said after the exhibition.

13 year old to compete in US Women's Championship
On Chess: 13 Year Old To Vie For U.S. Women’s Championship
By BRIAN JERAULD
Apparently, the U.S. “Women’s” Chess Championship is a description that gets more liberal by the year.
Where last season’s national title fight featured Dallas’ Sarah Chiang - 15 at the time - this year’s will feature Ashritha Eswaran, a 13-year-old National Master out of San Jose, Calif. Over the weekend, Eswaran accepted the invitation as the wildcard to the 2014 event, rounding out the 10-player field. The tournament will take place May 7 through May 20 at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis in the Central West End.
Eswaran won’t be the youngest-ever in the nation’s most-prestigious women’s tournament - that record is held byreigning champion GM Irina Krush, who entered as an 11 year old in 1995 - but her meteoric rise to the top ranks is making footnotes. Picking up chess as a 7 year old might be considered “late” for most of the groomed chess-elite, and Eswaran even spent the first year of her career just hanging around with the other kids. An averagely decent 650 rating is usually just good enough to earn the attention of your parents - and thank goodness it did.
At the start of 2010, the then 9-year-old began her first private lessons, and they worked on the girl like Miracle Gro. By the next January, her rating had doubled to 1300, then she leaped another 500 points in 2011.

Rwanda: Chess Olympiad - Eight Through to Final Qualifying Round
Rwanda: Chess Olympiad - Eight Through to Final Qualifying Round
BY PONTIAN KABEERA, 10 APRIL 2014
EIGHT local chess players have advanced to the final round of the national qualifiers for the bi-annual International Chess Olympiad set for August in Tromso, Norway.
They include the reigning national champion Godfrey Kabera, who is tipped to grab one of the five slots that will be at stake. The final round of qualifiers is scheduled for May 1 to 10 at Kigali Institute of Science and technology (KIST).
En-route to the final round, Kabera defeated Theotime Rutaremara with a 27.5 score mark out of 30 in a very tight game played last Saturday at KIST.
"It was a tough game but I managed to get through it and I am optimistic of snatching a place on the national team for the World Olympiad," said Kabera, who is ranked 1909 internationally. He however noted that more preparations are still needed, "I still have to work very hard so as to improve my game and be able to stage a good performance in the Olympiad."
Despite the defeat, Rutaremara, one of the most experienced chess players in the country also qualified for the final round. Other players who reached the final round include; Alex Ruzigura, Fidele Mutabazi, Eugene Kagabo, Alain Niyibizi, Maxence Murara and
Jean Baptiste Hakizimana. Rwanda has previously participated in several Chess Olympiads but failed to impress - and the country is currently ranked 145th by the World
Chess Federation, behind regional giants Uganda at 105, Burundi at 128 and Kenya at 139.
